Stem cell therapy is an intervention strategy that introduces stem cells into damaged tissues to treat injury or disease. Stem cells have the ability to self-renew and subsequently they differentiate and become cells with different capabilities. This quality is important because they we can use them to replace dead or damaged tissue with out the risk of side effects and rejection.
Many stem cell treatments exist, but most are in the experimental stage. Only bone marrow transplantation has developed well. It is anticipated that with the aid of stem cells, we will soon be able to treat diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s disease, cardiac failure, diabetes, neurological disorders and others.
Umbilical cord or embryonic stem cells are used in conditions like lymphoma and leukemia. Chemotherapy used for treating cancer cannot distinguish between healthy cells and cancerous cells. The red blood cells producing stem cells are also killed. Stem cells therapy attempts to reintroduce stem cells into the bone marrow to replace the lost adult stem cells by stem cell transplantation.
Other potential stem cells therapies in the pipeline are treatments for cancer, injuries to the spinal cord, heart damage, brain damage blindness, missing teeth, etc.
