Korea Attracts Big 3 Medical Tourists

The three nations with the most Korea-bound medical tourists are China, the U.S., and Japan, according to industry data. Chinese medical tourists made up the largest share, with some 32,000 seeking treatment in Korea in 2012.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is a kind of cancer treatment that makes use of certain drugs and substances to inhibit attack and kill specific cancer cells without considerable damage to the healthy cells of the body.

The cells in the body undergo certain changes in the development of cancer. They undergo a process called carcinogenesis and turn into cancer cells. These in turn produce tumors or multiply throughout the body as seen in the case of leukemia. Targeted therapy targets this particular process in order to stop the growth and reach of cancerous cells.
Types of drugs used for targeted therapy

   • Enzyme inhibitors – They are drugs that inhibit enzymes that function as signals for cancerous cells to develop and grow. This makes chemotherapy more effective as the tumor or cancer is not actively growing.

   • Apoptosis inducing drugs – Apoptosis is the scientific term for the death of cells. These drugs through certain chemical changes induce the killing of the cells in a more focused manner than chemotherapy and radiation.

   • Angiogenesis inhibitors – Angiogenesis is the scientific term for the development of new blood vessels in the body. It is a normal and healthy process in the body while growing and is helpful in the repair of wounds. But in case of cancer, these new vessels circulate the cancerous blood and bring nutrients to encourage their growth. These drugs stop the formation of these new vessels and inhibit their growth.

Cost of this treatment depends on the frequency and length of time for which these drugs are administered to the patients. The drugs are expensive and a treatment can cost thousands of dollars each month. Destinations like Thailand, Singapore, India, China and Japan offer the same treatments at much more affordable prices.
