Korea Attracts Big 3 Medical Tourists

The three nations with the most Korea-bound medical tourists are China, the U.S., and Japan, according to industry data. Chinese medical tourists made up the largest share, with some 32,000 seeking treatment in Korea in 2012.

Hyperthermia for Cancer Treatment

Hyperthermia refers to the condition of a higher body temperature. This can be caused due to the reaction of the immunity system to the attack of illness in the body. But, in terms of cancer treatment, hyperthermia refers to controlled use of heat to eradicate cancerous cells or prepare the body for radiation and chemotherapy. 

Though, higher temperatures make the cells more receptive to cancer treatment, they also lead to the destruction of healthy cells in the body. New developments in this treatment procedure have made it possible to maintain the correct temperature focused only on the affected area in the body, but the process is still very challenging. 

For this reason it is crucial that any hyperthermia treatment is managed by an experienced and qualified specialist. 

Hyperthermia can be administered in two different ways:

    1. Local Hyperthermia - A very high temperature is used to eradicate cells from a small area in the body, generally a tumor. The heat is applied with the help of radio frequency, ultrasound and microwave. Based on the location of the tumor, methods like External, Endocavitary or Intraluminal are used in this form of treatment. 

    2. Regional Hyperthermia - This method, which uses three kinds of techniques like Deep tissue, Regional Perfusion and Continous Hyperthermic Peritoneal Perfusion (CHPP) to apply heat, is different from local hyperthermia. The entire body’s temperature is increased to a few degrees more than normal. The cells hence become more accepting of radiation, immunotherapy and chemotherapy and the chances of success increase.

Hyperthermia treatment is very expensive in countries like the USA. People in many cases choose to travel to places like Thailand, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and China as such treatments are available at highly affordable prices in these countries.
