Brazil Gets Credit For Helping Start Medical Tourism

Brazil originally opened up medical options for patients outside of the US! In 1999, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein was the first outside of the US to be accredited by JCI.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy, radiotherapy or radiation oncology is the use of ionizing radiation in cancer treatment to destroy malignant cells. Radiation therapy may be performed on a certain part of the body if the cancer is localized. It may also be used to prevent the recurrence of a tumor after a primary malignant tumor has been removed.

Radiation therapy is used along with chemotherapy and surgery to treat cancer. It works by damaging the DNA in exposed tissue and leads to cell death. Radiation therapy is distinct from radiology where radiation is used for medical imaging and the diagnosis that follows. It may be used for palliative treatments where it is not possible to cure and only symptomatic relief or local disease control can be achieved. It is also used prior to bone marrow transplant, in a process called full body radiation. Other conditions where radiotherapy is used include severe eye disease due to thyroid problems, trigeminal neuralgia and keloid scar growth prevention.
