Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy involves treating cancer with antineoplastic drugs or a combination of similar drugs through a standardized treatment regimen. Chemotherapy agents are also used to treat certain other ailments such as multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, psoriatic arthritis, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

Cancer cells usually divide and spread rapidly. Chemotherapy kill such cells. Chemotherapy will also kill normal cells that rapidly divide such as cells of the bone marrow, hair follicles and digestive tracts. Chemotherapy is usually delivered intravenously, though there are agents that can be delivered orally such as capecitabine, busulfan, melphalan, etc. Sometimes isolated infusion may also be practiced, targeting affected areas in the lung or liver. The idea is to deliver high doses to affected sites without causing extensive system damage. Doctors who specialize in the treatment of cancer are called oncologists.
