Kidney Transplantation

Kidney transplantation is done to replace a diseased kidney with a healthy one. A kidney may be damaged due to various reasons like longstanding diabetes or an injury.

Types:

  • Living-donor transplant. Here the kidney from a relative or friend whose kidney matches the recipient is taken. Kidney donation from a 'blood relative' is most successful.
  • Cadaver-donor transplant. Here, kidneys of a deceased person are taken out and transplanted within a given time frame.

Patients are usually discharged about 7 to 10 days post surgery. Recipients are required to take life-long drugs for immune suppression to avoid kidney rejection by the body. This reduces immunity and patients have to be very cautious about this.
