Pancreas Transplantation

Pancreas is the main source of insulin. Diabetes affects pancreas and inhibits its function. Pancreas transplant is done in patients with severe diabetes for a healthy pancreas. It is often done in conjunction with a kidney transplant.

Types:

  • A pancreas transplant alone, where only the pancreas is transplanted.
  • Combined kidney-pancreas transplant, where both kidney and pancreas are transplanted simultaneously.
  • Pancreas-after-kidney transplant, where pancreas is replaced some time after kidney transplantation.

Pancreas replacement is not possible in patients with cancers that are not treatable; incurable infections; and severe complications with heart, lungs or liver.

Patients are typically prescribed life-long, anti-organ-rejection drugs after surgery. It is vital that patients follow up with their doctors regularly.
