Bone Marrow Transplantation

Bone marrow is made up of soft fatty tissue. These contain stem cells, which produce blood cells. A bone marrow transplant is done to replace damaged bone marrow.

Types:

  • Autologous – patient's own stem cells are used.
  • Syngeneic – stem cells of an identical twin are used.
  • Allogeneic – stem cells of a related or an unrelated donor with a bone marrow match are used.
  • Umbilical cord blood contains stem cells and can be used for transplant.

People suffering from cancers that require chemotherapy or radiation therapy need this transplant as the marrow is destroyed during these therapies.

They are used in the following conditions:

  • Leukemia.
  • Lymphoma.
  • Multiple myeloma.
  • Severe immunodeficiency syndromes.
  • Aplastic anemia.
  • Congenital neutropenia.
  • Thalassemia.
  • Sickle cell anemia.
