Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is used to treat infertility in couples. The sperm collected beforehand is directly released in the uterus of the woman with the help of a thin tube through the vagina. The sperm is released above the cervix and sometimes along with some nutritive fluids to help them reach the egg in the fallopian tube.

Stimulated Intrauterine Insemination is the process in which the woman’s menstrual cycle is observed and made to ovulate with the use of hormone treatments or fertility drugs. On the other hand, unstimulated IUI does not require any prior preparation for insemination to take place. The doctor usually decides on the kind of IUI depending on the medical history and ovulation frequency of the woman.

IUI Procedures

If the woman is not being treated with fertility drugs, the fast moving sperms are usually inserted anytime between the 12th and the 16th day of the woman’s menstrual cycle. Blood and urine tests are conducted to know when ovulation takes place.

Fertility drugs are prescribed for women who have irregular ovulation and regular ultrasound scans are performed to observe the development of the eggs. Some of the most common fertility drugs that are prescribed for stimulated IUI are:

Clomid for stimulated IUI:  For women with irregular ovulation, clomifene citrate or clomid is used to manage the production and release of the egg. This drug is taken from the 2nd to the 6th day of the period. This can sometimes lead to the production of multiple eggs, increasing the risk of multiple pregnancies.

Metformin for stimulated IUI: Metformin is a drug that is used to stimulate egg production and release in women with polycystic ovaries who have highly irregular ovulation. It can have an impact on the digestive system.

IUI is not as expensive as IVF and can be a good option for people who do not have adequate insurance coverage and are trying out different options. Popular destinations like Thailand, India, Greece, Costa Rica and Singapore are some of the best places for fertility treatments. It is sometimes wiser to travel to top medical tourism hotspots for fertility treatments because they offer respite from the hassle of everyday life and reduce stress, which is one of the most common reasons for couples not conceiving even after treatment. These places have state-of-the-art fertility clinics, support centers and excellent infrastructure to cater to a broad spectrum of fertility-related issues.
