Korea Attracts Big 3 Medical Tourists

The three nations with the most Korea-bound medical tourists are China, the U.S., and Japan, according to industry data. Chinese medical tourists made up the largest share, with some 32,000 seeking treatment in Korea in 2012.

Ear Examination (Otoscopy)

As ENT doctors use otoscopes to conduct ear examinations, this procedure is also known as “Otoscopy”. Otoscopy is done to check the external auditory canal of patients. This allows doctors to assess the middle ear via the eardrum and find problems in this region of the skull, which contains balance and hearing mechanisms.

This is an extremely common procedure performed on patients complaining of earaches, hearing loss, infections, and other ear problems. During this examination, the auricle or outer part of the ear is gently pulled backwards and upwards and the tip of the otoscope is placed in the ear. The pulling action straightens the auditory canal allowing for better examination. Patients may feel slight discomfort and pain during the procedure if they have ear infections.
