Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis (narrowing) is a condition where the spaces in the spinal canal are narrowed. This exerts abnormal pressure on the nerve roots causing pain and other symptoms.

Factors that cause spinal stenosis are age, heredity, arthritis, spine tumors, injury or spinal instability. The most common symptoms are difficulty with walking, feeling of clumsiness, pain, frequent falls, numbness and tingling, cold or hot sensation in the legs.

Diagnosis of spinal stenosis is tough as the symptoms mimic a lot of diseases. The tools that diagnose this are MRI, myelogram, and CT scan, which image the spine pointing out structural abnormalities.

This can be treated by postural awareness, medicines, and rest. If all else fails, then surgery can be considered.
