Spinal Fusion for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally. Spinal fusion involves use of various instruments to straighten the spine and placing small pieces of bone in the joints that grow in such a way that the spine is straightened permanently.

The surgery is either performed through the front of the body called anterior approach or through the back called posterior approach.

This surgery takes several hours to complete. Patients usually spend several days in the hospital after surgery. Upon discharge, weight-lifting and activity restrictions are advised. Apart from pain medications, antibiotics are also prescribed to avoid infections.

Age range of 10 to 12 years is ideal for this surgery; however, adults can also undergo this surgery.
