Heart Failure Program

Heart failure or congenital heart failure is the heart's inability to pump enough blood to satisfy the body’s needs. This occurs owing to a weakening of heart muscles. There are many signs that a heart is going to fail - swelling in the legs, exercise intolerance, shortness of breath, etc.

In some cases the heart does not fill with enough blood whereas in others it can't pump enough blood. It is possible that only the right side of the heart fails. If this happens, blood won't pump to the lungs. When the left side fails, aortic flow to the body and to the brain is compromised. More often both sides of the heart will fail together.

There are many causes of heart failure such as heart attacks, hypertension, heart disease, coronary thrombosis, heart muscle disease or cardiomyopathy, etc. Heart failure is a common cause of death among the world’s population. Treatment consists of lifestyle changes, dietary changes, salt intake decrease, medication, implantation of medical devices, etc.
