Acute Myocardial Infarction Program

Acute Myocardial Infarction or a heart attack as it is commonly known, is said to occur when blood supply to a section of the heart is interrupted, leading to the death of cells in that part. The most common cause of a heart attack is a blockage in a coronary artery due to thrombosis. The resulting constraint on the supply of blood causes oxygen shortage.

If treatment is not administered in a timely manner, heart attacks can cause infarction (death) of heart tissue. Symptoms of heart attack include shooting chest pain, difficulty in breathing, sweating, palpitations, vomiting and fatigue. Diagnostic tests used to determine heart attacks include echocardiography, electrocardiogram, cardiac MRI and many other blood tests.

Those at risk of myocardial infarction include the old, obese and tobacco smokers. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and those who are physical inactive are also at risk.
