Medical Tourists Rest Assured with Mtqua

Medical Travel Quality Alliance (MTQUA) has launched the very first system of assessment that judges medical centres in 10 key areas directly affecting a health tourist’s well-being.

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

During PCTA, a coronary artery blocked due to coronary artery disease is opened and blood flow restored to the muscles of the heart. In PTCA, a special catheter is used. Percutaneous means any medical procedure where access to internal organs is obtained by puncturing the skin through a needle. Transluminal refers to passage along a blood vessel's lumen.

The catheter is equipped with a tiny balloon on the tip. When the catheter reaches the site of the blockage, the balloon is inflated. This compresses the plaque against the artery walls. Depending on the level of blockage, the doctor may recommend another procedure called atherectomy. Here a rotating tip or tiny blades on the balloon break the plaque or cut it away. Atherectomy is used when the plaque is calcified or hardened.
