Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary Angioplasty is a technique that is used to open blocked or narrow arteries in the heart. This procedure can restore blood flow to the muscles of the heart.

As we age, plaque deposits on the inner walls of the arteries. This can happen to any artery of the body. When it affects the coronary arteries it is called coronary heart disease. Over time, this plaque hardens or ruptures, causing decreased blood flow to the heart muscles. When the muscles of the heart receive less blood, they become starved of oxygen. This may lead to a heart attack.

In angioplasty, a flexible thin catheter with a balloon on the tip is introduced into a blood vessel. This is directed to the affected artery. Once there, the balloon is slightly inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wall. This process restores the flow of blood through the artery.
