Ophthalmologists and Optometrists perform many tests on patients to assess their vision, the health of their eyes and their ability to focus. These tests are categorized under Eye Examination. This examination allows doctors to detect brain diseases, tumours, infections and other treatable diseases that can cause blindness if left untreated. Regular eye examinations are suggested by all healthcare professionals. All patients complaining of head or eye problems are first given an eye examination. Basic eye examination is done to check the eyelids, external tissues and palpebral tissue. The conjunctive and sclera is then checked by pushing back the eyelids and shining a light into the eye. The cornea and iris is also checked during basic examinations. Usually the Snellen chart or Phoropter is used to check vision and to gauge the optical power.
