PAP Smear and Pelvic Exam

A pelvic exam is an examination of the pelvic organs in a female. There are two types of pelvic exams viz. Manual Uterine Palpation and Bimanual Exam. PAP smears are usually taken during a pelvic examination. These are swabs or loose cells that can be found in cervix. These swabs are used to determine any abnormalities present in the cervix.

The pelvic exam can be conducted with the help of a speculum or manually by a medical professional. The next stage involves the examiner palpating the uterus. A pelvic exam is not usually very uncomfortable. If a woman has any infection then she may feel some pain when the speculum is being inserted. Also you might experience some pain during palpation of the ovaries.
