Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye that damages the optic nerve in a distinct pattern. It is caused by the increase or decrease in fluid pressure of the aqueous humour (intraocular pressure). This damage is permanent and often causes blindness. It ranks only after cataracts as the most common cause of blindness among middle-aged and elderly people.

Laser surgery is the best solution, although it can only save eyesight and not restore it. Laser Trabeculoplasty and Iridotomy are the most common surgeries to treat open-angle and closed-angle Glaucoma respectively. Basically, a high energy laser beam is focused at the drainage system of the eye and it manipulates the aqueous fluid to flow out of the drain more easily. Laser surgery lowers the intraocular pressure and can be completed in minutes.
