Healthcare System and Quality in Costa Rica

According to the World Health Organization, Costa Rica has the best healthcare system in Latin America and ranks among the top countries, for the same, in the world. This has lead to the phenomena of health tourism in this country that has seen a major boom in the recent years. The life expectancy rate in the country is one of the highest and there is a very small percentage of infant mortality. Some of the reasons for this is the comfortable pace of life coupled with good food habits and lifestyle.

But, one of the most important factors for this is the universal healthcare facility for all the residents of the country. Also, hospitals and clinics are constantly upgraded to match advancement in the medical field without any considerable rise in the cost of healthcare. There are both government and private run organizations and hospitals that cater to all medical needs of the citizens and of medical tourists as well.

Costa Rica despite being a middle-income country has managed to provide free medical services to all its citizens that cater to all their needs from childbirth to death. The doctors are well qualified and a lot of them have got their degrees from universities abroad. The effectiveness of the healthcare is evident in the fact that the country has one of the highest life expectancy rates in the world, besides having become one of the leading names in the medical tourism industry.

The Costa Rican Department of Social Security or Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social makes universal healthcare available to all the citizens of the country. People can avail of affordable medical consultation and treatment from CCSS’s network of more than 30 hospitals and over 250 clinics throughout the country.

Hospitals and Doctors Standards in Costa Rica

All the government hospitals and clinics are equipped with the latest infrastructure and offer high-quality medical services. Most of these hospitals are affiliated to the CCSS, which ensures that stringent standards are maintained in the quality of medical care.

There are two private hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission International, which is a sign of the international standards that they conform to, in terms of both infrastructure and treatment. Expected medical standards vary from place to place, therefore a JCI accreditation gives medical tourists confidence in the internationally accepted standards of medical care and the quality of treatments provided.

Several doctors who practice at hospitals in Costa Rica have studied abroad and are abreast with the latest developments in the field of medicine. They are also well versed in English and hence can efficiently serve the global market.  They are supported by cutting-edge technology in their endeavor to cater to the needs to patients, both local and foreign.

Doctors here specialize in dentistry, cosmetic surgery, bariatric surgery, neurology, and cardiology among others. People from neighboring countries and throughout the world come to Costa Rica to take advantage of these specialized treatments at highly affordable costs, sometimes saving up to 50 percent of what it would cost them in their own countries.
