Eyelash Implants Surgery and Cost

11 March 2015

Eyelash implants can help thicken or lengthen the lashes by installing several lash hair strands surgically onto the upper eyelid rims. While the surgery was originally reserved for patients with congenital malformations or who had been through injuries, nearly 80 percent of the eyelash surgeries that are carried out today are for cosmetic purposes. During the procedure, the surgeon does not use artificial hair, but instead uses minute hair strands from other parts of the body. Typically, these tiny hair strands used for implantation are obtained from the individuals' neck area. In some cases, leg hair may be used as well. The eyelash implant procedure results in the transplant of realistic eyelashes that mimic and blend well with the natural lashes.

Eyelash implants usually last a lifetime, and do not ask to be replaced down the line. However, it is likely that they will grow after the transplantation process, and may have to be trimmed every now and then to ensure that they are in the same length as the remaining lashes. While some individuals do this themselves, others choose to visit a cosmetic surgery clinic to have them trimmed.

Who should consider eyelash implants?

Eyelash implants can be helpful in a number of cases such as:

    • Trichotillomania patients who have a habit of plucking eyelashes (aside from other body-hair) compulsively
    • Absence of hair throughout the body, including eyelashes from congenital conditions
    • Physical trauma or injuries from industry accidents, road accidents, eyelid tattoos, chemical/ thermal burns, combined with traction alopecia
    • Medical treatments, surgeries, tumor or injuries that have resulted in hair loss or removal of lashes
    • Damaged eyelashes during the course of a beauty routine

Typically eyelashes that have been damaged should regrow in about 6 to 12 months, provided the damage has not been severed. In case the damage is not temporary, an eyelash implant procedure can help replace the lashes, or enhance weak, short, sparse or thin lashes.

Eyelash transplant surgery

An eyelash implant surgery can take anywhere between two and three hours. The cosmetic surgeon transplants about 25-50 strands of hair during the procedure. Then again, the existing hair volume in the eyelash area is taken up for consideration while deciding how many hair strands are to be transplanted as a part of the cosmetic procedure. The cosmetic surgeon first obtains the hair from the individuals’ nape, leg or neck area. The outer layers of the hair like the dermis and epidermis are stripped before they can be used for implantation purpose. The surgeon also removes oils that may be present before grafting it onto the individual's eyelid.

The individual may be administered a mild sedative during the surgery. Eye covers will be used to ensure that the patients' eyes are protected from surgical instruments during the procedure. The surgeon makes incisions on the patient's upper eyelid with the help of scalpels, and transplants the hair follicles onto them. The eyelash grafts are usually separated into single units to be sown into the eyelid by means of an extremely thin needle.

Cost of eyelash implants

The cost of eyelash implants depends on the number of implant grafts, costing about $1,000- $2,500 per eye in the US. In the UK, the average cost of eyelash implants is £2,000. India, Thailand and Japan are some popular destinations that give individuals a shot at affordable eyelash implant surgeries, while also offer an additional vacation. Many individuals are traveling to these destinations from across the globe to partake in cost-effective eyelash implant surgeries and unwind after, on their holiday.
